Western’s 1924 Physics & Astronomy Building is one of the oldest on the campus, and was in desperate need of restoration. Extensive planning went into creating a modern new learning environment while re-using existing spaces as much as possible to minimize new construction. The program was successful in not only conserving the heritage of the facility, but enhancing the existing features by revealing previously unseen historic elements and clearly delineating the new and heritage structures.  Abbott’s team was engaged for project management, cost consulting, and risk management services.

We worked with the design team to manage a restoration program that both preserved and enhanced the existing authentic structure. The enclosure of the four-story exterior courtyard not only provides an abundance of needed natural light from skylights, but allows for imperative inter-connectivity with multiple stair cases and walkways throughout the heart of the building.
