With over one hundred years of service to Western University, this iconic building was put to the test to provide the necessary resources to accommodate a 21st century learning community. Abbott’s team was elected to transform the environment of the University College, and ensure that every dollar invested into the complex renovation contributed maximum value toward the building's longevity. Being a historical restoration project, much of the building infrastructure required replacement, including mechanical and electrical systems, as well as information and communication technologies.

Our team worked alongside Western University, bringing a variety of ideas in outlining creative ways to overcome the limitations imposed by being an older building, such as low floor to floor height, and structural restrictions. Phase one involved the restoration of the original concrete structure, which was both sinking and pivoting due to structural decay and delamination. This crucial restoration step was not only delivered successfully, but it was delivered while the performance arts theater maintained use below the tower. Phase two encompassed the complete modernization of the facility, including all mechanicals, classrooms, and amphitheater.

With the ongoing collaborative effort with the consulting team, Abbott was able to deliver on their promise of a successful historical restoration and facility upgrade, advancing Westerns expectations. The iconic University College Tower now stands as the new home of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
